Richard Genée

Richard Genée, actually Franz Friedrich Richard Genée, ( born February 7, 1823 in Gdansk, † 15 June 1895 in Baden near Vienna ) was a German -Austrian librettist, playwright and composer.

Life

Genée was the son of opera singer (bass) and director of the Gdansk City Theatre Genée Friedrich ( 1795-1856 ).

He first studied medicine, then music and studied composition with A. Stahlknecht in Berlin. From 1848 he worked as a theater conductor in Reval, Riga, 1852/1853 in Cologne, Dusseldorf, Aachen, Gdansk, 1857 in Mainz, 1864/65 at the Prague National Theatre, then at the Court Opera Schwerin and at the Deutsche Oper in Amsterdam.

Richard Genée was a friend of Friedrich von Flotow and worked from 1868 a decade as Kapellmeister at the Theater an der Wien. Together with Franz cell ( operetta company cell and Genée ), he wrote a number of libretti for operettas of Strauss, Millöcker, Suppe, Ziehrer among others two of the most famous operettas, whose lyrics he co-authored, are Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss (along with Karl Haffner ) and The beggar Student of Millöcker (together with Franz cell ).

In 1876 he composed the operetta The midshipman. At the chess opening a case, the Seekadettenmatt is named after this operetta.

Genée spent the winter months in Berlin, during the summer months in Vienna, Preßbaum or in his house [note 1] in Baden - where he " during a spa stay " died and Protestant faith, was buried on June 17, 1895 at the city cemetery. Among the mourners, Johann Strauss, Karl and Karl Millöcker Komzák were.

1951 Geneegasse in Vienna Hietzing was named in his honor. More Richard Genée under assessment terms of traffic areas are detectable in Baden near Vienna (since 1995) and Untertullnerbach.
