Richard Vincent, Baron Vincent of Coleshill

Richard Frederick Vincent, Baron Vincent of Coleshill, GBE, KCB, DSO ( born August 23, 1931 in Norwood Green, Middlesex ) is a British Field Marshal and life peer.

Life and career

Vincent attended Aldenham School in Hertfordshire, and went in 1951 to the Royal Artillery, initially as an officer of the National Service. From 1951 to 1955 he served in the British Army of the Rhine, and from 1960 to 1961 at the Radar Research Establishment at Malvern.

In 1965 he attended the Army Staff College at Camberley. He then served with the Commonwealth Brigade in Malaysia until 1968. From 1968 to 1970 Vincent served as General Staff Officer (General Staff Officer ) worked at the Department of Defense, after which he commanded until 1972 the 12th Light Air Defence Regiment in Germany and Northern Ireland. He then returned to Camberley, where the Staff College, he was a Lecturer ( Instructor ) worked until 1973. From 1974 to 1975 he was a military director of studies at the Royal Military College of Science in Shrivenham. After the 19th Brigade commanded Able Airport from 1975 to 1977, he attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in Belgrave Square in London, after he was 1979-1980 Deputy Military Secretary.

He then returned as commander of the Royal Military College of Science Shrivenham after for the period 1980 to 1983 and was appointed in connection to the Master General of the Ordnance in Defence. He held until 1987 this office and was subsequently appointed Vice Chief of the Defence Staff and Chief of the 1991 Defence Staff.

In addition to his full-time positions, he was from 1981 to 1987 Colonel Commandant of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers ( REME ) and from 1982 to 1991 Honorary Colonel of 100 ( Yeomanry ) Field Regiment RA (V).

He was Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS ) of the United Kingdom and thus head of the British Armed Forces. After retiring in 1992 he was Chair of the Military Committee of NATO from 1993 to 1996.

Membership in the House of Lords

After his retirement he was on 3 September 1996 for Life peer as Baron Vincent of Coleshill, of Shrivenham appointed in the County of Oxfordshire. His maiden speech in the House of Lords he held on 8 December 1998., Where he sits as a Cross Bencher.

From 1997 to 1998 he was advisor to the Undersecretary for strategic defense planning.

Honors

Vincent was 1990 winner of the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire. In 1984 he was winner of the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in 1972 and the Distinguished Service Order ( DSO).

In 1995 he became a Fellow of the Imperial College London and 1999 from the City and Guilds of London Institute. Since 2011 he is a senior fellow at Cranfield University. In addition, Vincent carrier of the Jordanian Order of Merit First Class, U.S. Legion of Merit in the rank of Commander and Freeman of the City of London and a member of the Guild of Freemen, and in 1997 by the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights.

The Cranfield University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1985 a Doctor of Science ( DSc ). 1990 Vincent Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Society was.

Family

Vincent married in 1955 Jean Patterson. They had two sons ( one of whom died young) and a daughter.
