View of vineyards

Vineyards was until December 31, 2012, a municipality in the electoral district of See-Gaster in the canton of St. Gallen. On January 1, 2013, it merged with the municipality of Ernetschwil Gommiswald.

The community bordered on the Toggenburg and offers a unique view of the whole Linthebene and Lake Zurich.

History

For the first time vineyards was mentioned in a document in 1045 as Rieta. For other documents showing that the village until 1798 was under the lordship of the monastery GeopathSchänis. During the Helvetic Republic (1798-1803) vineyards was a Munizipalgemeinde the canton Linth. Subsequently, the municipality was merged with cold Brunn SG. At the request of vineyards and with the consent of Kaltenbrunn the communities were separated again in 1825 and independent communities.

Attractions

Landmark of vineyards is the neo-Baroque parish church of St. Magnus, built 1912-1914 by architect Adolf Gaudy. It replaced an earlier church built in 1769 simple.
