Ring (diacritic)

A Kroužek ( [ kroʊ̯ʒɛk ]; tschech. diminutive to kruh 'Ring' ), also called Kreis-/Ringakzent, is a diacritical mark to designate a special emphasis on pronunciation or a letter. There is a small circle (˚) centered over the letter - not to be confused with a degree sign. It depends, inter alia in the Czech, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. In German, it is occasionally used for transcription of several dialects Loud (such as the Bavarian dialects ) used.

Occurrence

The sign has different meanings in different languages:

  • In Czech, the letter ů [u ː ] is spoken ( originated from o uo to about ů )
  • In Danish, Norwegian and Swedish å denotes the lute [ ɔ ] and [ o ː ].

Display on the computer

Fonts

In the ASCII character set Kroužek does not occur. In the character sets of ISO 8859 family selected character with Kroužek occur, ISO 8859-1 contains Å and å. , In ISO 8859-2 there Ů and ů.

Unicode contains additional finished composed character with Kroužek and can represent any character with acute by adjusting a combining Kroužek.

TeX and LaTeX 2.09 do not know the general ring accent, they may represent only the letter Å. LaTeX2e can represent any character with ring. There are to two different commands:

  • In text mode for typesetting \ generates a ra å.
  • In math mode for the set of formulas \ mathring a generated å the formula.

However, it is possible to represent with \ aa { } a å.
