Pope Benedict XVI. appointed him on 26 May 2011 as Bishop of Rapid City. The Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, John Clayton Nienstedt, donated to him on July 28th of the same year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Samuel Joseph Aquila, Bishop of Fargo, and Martin John Amos, Bishop of Davenport.
