Robert S. Ingersoll

Robert Stephen Ingersoll ( born January 28, 1914 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, † August 22 2010 in Evanston, Illinois ) was an American politician and diplomat.

Life

Ingersoll made ​​his degree in 1937 at Yale University. Then he hit a career as a businessman; among other things, he was Chairman and CEO of BorgWarner Corporation in Chicago and director of the First National Bank of Chicago.

Under the presidency of Richard Nixon Ingersoll entered the diplomatic service. From 1972 to 1973 he served as United States Ambassador to Japan, after he worked until 1974 as Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs ( Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs ) in the U.S. Department of State. In 1974 he was finally Deputy Foreign Minister, a position he held under President Gerald Ford.

After he resigned from this office in 1976, Ingersoll joined the management board ( Board of Trustees ) of the University of Chicago, where he remained until 1981.
