Robert von Pöhlmann

Robert of Pöhlmann ( born October 31, 1852 in Nuremberg, † September 27, 1914 in Munich ) was a German historian.

Life

Pöhlmann studied in Munich (with Wilhelm Giese Brecht and Heinrich Brunn ) in Göttingen ( Georg Waitz ) and Leipzig (with Wilhelm Roscher ) history. In Waitz in Göttingen, he received his doctorate in 1875 with a thesis on The Römerzug Emperor Henry VII and the Politics of Curie, the House of Anjou and the Guelph League. The work is today, although not considered to be spectacular, but a solid, blessed is the use of new sources. Surprisingly, he joined, after another highly acclaimed work of the Italian Renaissance, with his habilitation in ancient history specialist. The text submitted to the University of Erlangen font was entitled Hellenistic ideas about the relationship between nature and history. This entry into the ancient history is still regarded as very original. In 1884 he became associate professor in Erlangen on the newly created Department of Ancient History, 1886 finally full professor. In 1901 he became Professor of Ancient History in Munich to a newly established chair there ( after Eduard Meyer had rejected the call).

1913 took over Pöhlmann of Ivan Muller, the editorship of the Manual of Classical Studies, an activity that by his death was an early end to a year later.

Pöhlmann been corresponding since 1887, in 1901 a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and there from 1907 secretary of the historical class. In 1909 he was knighted. His research areas and questions can Pöhlmann appear as unique in its own way figure of the German ancient history. He was the father of dermatologists August Poehlmann.

Services

Pöhlmann worked intensively with Plato and other ancient authors such as Ephorus, Hippocratic writings and Strabo. Characteristic is the confrontation was not only historic, but also with geographical and philolosophischer literature. He dealt with the demographics of ancient cities, Roman economic history and social structure of the Romans, and especially with the Roman capitalism. Here he studied primarily with the theories of Karl Marx. Another field in which he worked, was the exploration of ancient utopias.

Also in the field of Italian economic history of the Renaissance in particular of Florence trod Pöhlmann the time uncharted territory.
