Roberto Grau

Roberto Gabriel Grau ( born March 18, 1900 in Buenos Aires, † April 12, 1944 ) was an Argentine chess player.

Life and tournament successes

Grey won 1921/1922, the first and 1928 the third championship of South America. In the second championship in 1925 and the fourth championship in 1934, he came second, while in 1925 behind Luis Palau and 1934 behind Aaron Schwartzman.

The Argentine championship he won in 1926 by winning first in the tournament and then in a duel 5-3 against the reigning champion Damian Reca. The title he defended without a fight, as tournament winner Damian Reca and after its cancellation runner Luis Palau 1927/1928 did not play against him. In the duel, he defeated after his tournament win Isaias Pléci 1928 4-0. After the title loss in 1929 against Pléci 3:5 he managed until 1934 again win the tournament by winning the duel against Luis Piazzini with 7,5:5,5 he was then re- Argentine champion. In 1935, he defended against Jacobo Bolbochán 5-3, but lost the title in 1936 with 2:6 to Carlos Guimard.

Gray took part in six Chess Olympiads, where he played for Argentina each. At the Chess Olympiad in Paris in 1924, he finished 12th in the individual standings. After that, he represented his country at the Chess Olympiad 1927 in London ( on top board he defeated, among others, Manuel Golmayo Torri duck and played draw against, among others, George Koltanowski, Siegbert Tarrasch, Hans Johner, Max Euwe, Lajos Asztalos, André Cheron and Ernst Grünfeld ), the Chess Olympiad 1928 in the Hague ( with wins against, among others, János Balogh and Valenti Marín and drawn games against, among others, Henri Weenink and Oskar Naegeli ), the Chess Olympiad 1935 in Warsaw, the Chess Olympiad 1937 in Stockholm and at the Chess Olympiad 1939 in Buenos Aires. In the last five appearances, he scored a total score of 38 points from 75 games ( 23, = 30, -22 ).

After calculating the historical Elo his highest rating was 2580 in April 1939. He was thus at the 39th place in the world rankings.

Gray died of a brain hemorrhage.
