Robin Corbett, Baron Corbett of Castle Vale

Robin Corbett, Baron Corbett of Castle Vale ( born December 22, 1933, Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia; † 19 February 2012) was a British journalist and politician of the Labour Party, the member of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords was.

Life

After visiting the Holly Lodge Grammar School in Smethwick in 1951 he performed his military service in the Royal Air Force and then began work as a journalist. First, he was a staff member of the Birmingham Evening Mail and then the Daily Mirror before he deputy editor of the weekly Farmer 's Weekly in 1968.

At the general election in October 1974, he was first elected as a Labour candidate for member of the House of Commons and represented there until his election defeat in the general election of May 3, 1979 constituency Hemel Hempstead. During this time he was opposition spokesman for domestic policy.

In the elections of 9 June 1983, he was again elected deputy of the lower house and this was up to his waiver of a renewed candidacy in the general election on 7 June 2001 as a representative of the constituency of Birmingham Erdington. Corbett was initially 1984-1987 Whip of the Labour Group, then to 1992 again home affairs spokesman and 1992-1995 opposition spokesman for the national heritage, radio and the press. Most recently, he served from 1999 to 2001 as chairman of the House Committee on Internal Affairs ( Home Affairs Select Committee).

After retiring from the House, he was raised in 2001 as a life peer with the title Baron Corbett of Castle Vale, Erdington in the County of West Midlands of the nobility and was from then on until his death in the House of Lords. Most recently, he was from 2005 to 2007 Chairman of the Group of the Labour peers in the upper house.

At times, he was also Chairman of the on part union " Parliamentary Committee for the Freedom of Iran " ( British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom ), the "Friends of Cyprus" ( Friends of Cyprus) as well as the non-partisan " group on reform of the criminal law " ( All Party Penal Reform Group).
