Rodney E. Slater

Rodney Earl Slater ( born February 23, 1955 in Marianna, Lee County, Arkansas) is an American lawyer and politician (Democratic Party). Under U.S. President Bill Clinton from 1997 to 2001 he was Minister of Transport of the United States.

Career

Slater studied at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Arkansas, where he obtained in 1980 the degree of Juris Doctor.

From 1979 to 1980 Slater was a research associate of the State Judiciary Committee of the Constitutional Convention of Arkansas, from 1980 employees of the Attorney General of Arkansas. He was appointed by then- Governor Bill Clinton to various functions of government. Slater was also director of the Committee on Governmental Affairs of the Arkansas State University during this time.

When Clinton President of the United States was in 1993, Slater became the first African-American chairman of the Federal Highway Administration. 1997 Slater was appointed Minister of Transport of the United States. He was by William Thaddeus Coleman, the second African- American in this office.

For his projects Slater received bipartisan support in Congress:

  • Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA -21), was placed with a record investment of 200 billion dollars for transportation services
  • Wendell H. Ford Aviation Investment Reform Act for the 21st Century (AIR -21), which provided an investment of 46 billion U.S. dollars to protect the safety in the national aviation system available
  • Negotiations on Open Skies agreements with other countries

After the election of George W. Bush as the new U.S. president Rodney Slater resigned from office in 2001.

Since 2010, Slater is an attorney with the law firm Patton Boggs LLP., Where he heads the transportation practice and working on infrastructure projects. In addition, he is a partner of James Lee Witt Associates, a risk management firm, which is the former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, James Lee Witt, passed.

He is currently a member of the board of directors of Africare and the Dance Theatre of Harlem. He is also Chairman of the Trustees of the United Way of America.

End of July 2006, it was announced that Slater was part of a group of investors around Stan Case, which had bought the Major League Baseball team the Washington Nationals. Slater is in addition also on the boards of Delta Air Lines and Verizon.
