Roger Etchegaray
Roger Marie Élie Cardinal Etchegaray ( born September 25, 1922 in Espelette, France) was Archbishop of Marseille and is an emeritus Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Since 2005 he has Subdean the College of Cardinals.
Life
Roger Etchegaray, Basque native, completed his Studies in philosophy and Catholic theology and licentiate in theology and a doctorate in canon law. In 1947 he received the Sacrament of Holy Orders and was used as a parish pastor in his home diocese of Bayonne.
From 1961 he worked in a responsible position in the Secretariat of the French Bishops' Conference and was instrumental in the establishment of the Secretariat for Pastoral Care issues. On August 4, 1962 he was awarded Pope John XXIII. the honorary title house Prelate of His Holiness. In the years 1966 to 1970, he took over the job of the Secretary-General in the French Episcopal Conference.
1969 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Bishop of Gemellae in Numidia and Auxiliary Bishop of Paris. On May 27, 1969, he received by Cardinal François Marty episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Rennes, Paul Cardinal Gouyon, and Curia Bishop Władysław Rubin. A year later, Etchegaray Archbishop of Marseille. In 1971, he became the first president of the Council of European Episcopal Conferences, which he remained until 1979. In 1975, he was the successor of Cardinal Marty President of the French Episcopal Conference and provided this office until 1981.
1979 took him Pope John Paul II as a Cardinal with the priestly title church of San Leone I. in the College of Cardinals in 1984 he appointed him president of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum " and the Pontifical Council " Justice and Peace ". The line for " Cor Unum " had Roger Etchegaray to 1995, for " Justice and Peace " held until 1998. 1994 appointed him to the Pope as President of the Central Committee for the preparation of the Holy Year 2000. 1998 John Paul II elevated him to cardinal bishop of Porto- Santa Rufina.
Special merits Cardinal Etchegaray has earned through his mediation efforts in various trouble spots in the world. John Paul II made him a special envoy in peacekeeping missions, such as the besieged Sarajevo, in the civil war Mozambique, in 2001 besieged Bethlehem to end the clashes between Israelis and Palestinians at the Church of the Nativity, 2003 in Iraq to the Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein to bring such an extent that it the will of the world community leans, and so to prevent a war between the United States and Iraq. Since he had the age limit of 80 years already passed, took Cardinal Etchegaray neither the conclave in 2005 in part at the conclave of 2013.
On 30 April 2005 it was confirmed Pope Benedict XVI. as new Subdean the College of Cardinals. The previous Subdean Angelo Cardinal Sodano had previously been selected as the successor of the new Pope to the dean of the college.
As Benedict XVI. was jumped unexpectedly on December 24, 2009 during the Christmas of a woman and it fell to the ground, rushed also Etchegaray. He suffered a hip fracture and had to undergo surgery, whereas Benedict XVI. was uninjured. Finally, after 3 weeks in the Gemelli hospital he was discharged.
