Ecclesiastical Province of Marseille

The Archdiocese of Marseille (Latin: Archidioecesis massiliensis ) is an Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in southeastern France, based in Marseille.

History

Supposedly early as the 1st century was the establishment of a bishopric in Marseille. The first bishop known by name is 314 Oresius year. In 417 the diocese of Marseille is part of the ecclesiastical province of Arles. The monastery of Saint -Victor was 750-960, the residence of the Bishops of Marseille. Around 1150, the Notre Dame de la Major cathedral was built in the style of Provencal Romanesque. 1801 to 1822 the diocese was temporarily lifted. Between 1852 and 1893 next to the old Episcopal Church built in the Neo-Byzantine style new cathedral Sainte Marie Majeure arose. It has two domed towers and a 16 -meter-high central dome.
