Roman Catholic Diocese of Langres

The diocese of Langres (Latin: Dioecesis Lingonensis ) is a located in France Roman Catholic diocese based in Langres. The bishop and the bishop's offices are located in Chaumont. The territory of the diocese corresponds to the department of Haute -Marne.

History

The diocese of Langres was built in the 3rd century as a suffragan of Lyon. In the Middle Ages it was one of the most important and richest dioceses of France. Its territory ranged in the south to Dijon, in the west to the gates of Auxerre. The bishops of Langres bore the title of Peer of France. For the religious life of the strong presence of the Cistercians was significant.

1731 Dijon was separated with the surrounding areas of Langres and elevated to the bishopric ( since 1822 Archdiocese ). The diocese of Langres was abolished after the French Revolution and the end of the Ancien Régime in the course of the Church's reorganization in 1801 and divided among the bishoprics of Dijon and Troyes. In 1822 it was rebuilt in the present boundaries. On 16 December 2002 Langres was reclassified from the ecclesiastical province of Lyon in the ecclesiastical province of Reims.
