Roman Catholic Diocese of Soissons

The diocese of Soissons (Latin: Dioecesis Suessionensis ( Laudunensis et Sanquintinensis ) ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in France. It extends essentially in the area of the department of Aisne. Seat of the diocese is the city of Soissons. Episcopal church is the cathedral of Saint- Gervais -et -Saint- Protais ( Gervase and Protasius ).

History

The Diocese of Soissons was at the beginning of the 4th century as a diocese in Augusta Suessionum ( Soissons ), created the later capital of the Frankish kingdom of Soissons, making it - like other dioceses in capitals too - from the beginning occupied a special position in the Church hierarchy.

After the French Revolution, the Diocese of Soissons was re- established by the Concordat of 1801 as suffragan of the Archdiocese of Paris, in 1822, but associated with the Archdiocese of Reims.

Statistics

The end of 2010 lived on the territory of the diocese of 548 017 inhabitants. Of these, 397 187 ( 72.5 %) Catholics who are pastoral care in 43 parishes.
