Roger James Elliott

Roger James Elliott ( born December 8, 1928 in Chesterfield) is an English theoretical solid state physicist.

Sir Roger Elliott taught since 1957 at Oxford University in theoretical physics, first as a lecturer and since 1974 as a professor. Since 1996 he is professor emeritus. From 1988 to 1993 he was CEO of the academic publisher Oxford University Press. His research interests are in the theory of solid state physics. Particularly noteworthy are his contributions to the theory of magnetism. He has published four books and about 200 journal articles.

He has received numerous awards, including the Institute of Physics 1968 Maxwell Medal and 1990, the Guthrie Medal and honorary doctorates in Paris, Bath and Essex. Elliott is a member of the Royal Society since 1976.
