Roger of Salerno

Roger of Salerno and Roger from the Principate († June 28, 1119 at Sarmada ) out of the house Hauteville was regent of the Principality of Antioch from 1112 to 1119.

He was the son of Richard of the Principate and relative of Tancred of Tiberias, both grandsons of Tancred of Hauteville and participants of the First Crusade. He became regent of Antioch, as Tancred died in 1112, and because the current prince, Bohemond II was still a child. How Tancred, Roger was almost constantly at war with the nearby Muslim countries such as Aleppo. 1114 were destroyed by an earthquake many of the fortifications of the principality, so that Roger was working on it so that in the years that border rebuild especially.

Roger suggested two armies of Seldschukensultans Muhammad I. Tapar led by General Bursuq of Hamadan in the Battle of Sarmin ( 1114 ) and in the battle of Tell Danith ( 1115 ). Allied with Joscelin I of Edessa, he held so much pressure on Aleppo, that the city in 1118 allied himself with the Ortokiden Emir Ilghazi. Ilghazi invaded the principality in 1119, and Roger turned out to meet him immediately, instead of waiting for the gain of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the County of Tripoli. In the ensuing battle of Ager Sanguinis in which he went with 700 knights and 3,000 foot soldiers, almost all were killed, including Roger. Ilghazis troops sacked after the battle the area, but did not attack Antioch itself. Baldwin II of Jerusalem came to the north and took over the regency in the Principality.

His chancellor Walter Rogers has documented government in a chronicle.

Roger had by 1114 Hodierna of Rethel married the widow of Heri Fire III. , Lord of Hierges, and daughter of Hugh I, Count of Rethel. The marriage remained childless.
