Rolandas Pavilionis

Rolandas Pavilionis ( born July 3, 1944 in Šiauliai, † 10 May 2006, Vilnius) was a Lithuanian scientist, philosopher and politician and from 2004 until his death a member of the European Parliament for the Liberalų Demokratų Partija as part of the Union for a Europe of Nations.

Life

Pavilionis passed his Abitur in 1962 at the evening school in Šiauliai, during the day he worked in a bicycle factory. In the same year he enrolled at the University of Vilnius at the Philological Faculty. The studies were interrupted from 1963 to 1966 through his two years of military service in the Soviet Army. In 1968 he finished his studies and joined the post graduate course in the Department of Logic at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, which he finished as the candidate of sciences. After several years lecturing in Vilnius he could carry out from 1977 to 1978 a research stay at the Exillitauer Algirdas Julius Greimas at the Sorbonne, he graduated with the habilitation. 1982 Pavilionis was appointed professor at the University of Vilnius. In the wake of glasnost and perestroika, he was one of the protagonists of higher education reform and the elimination of ideological embossed curriculum of the university. From 1988 on, he was Vice-Rector, Rector from 1990 to 2000. In the cadenza from 2000 to 2004, he served as a non-party member of the Seimas for Naujoji Sąjunga. Here he worked in several parliamentary committees and commissions, particularly as chairman of the Committee for Education and Science. After the events of 11 September 2001 and the subsequent escalation he was the only Lithuanian politician who openly spoke out against a military option and the connection to the coalition of the willing. In 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament. After his death Eugenijus Maldeikis moved for him.

Pavilionis was a regular member of several scientific academies and winner of several medals and awards.
