History

The road over the Passo di Rolle, who is called in German Rolle Pass is one of the oldest in the Dolomites. Unlike most other roads of this region pass this road was completed in 1872. But already some decades earlier, since about the year 1820, the roll pass was probably already passable. This road was not enough, however, the demands placed on them, which is why you started from 1840-65 the street in the valley portion and 1870-72 to build from scratch the actual pass road.

This road was enough in the First World War no longer meet the requirements, but led on the Rolle Pass an important supply route to the front. The necessary expansion was soon begun, but was completed only in 1919. Meanwhile, the connection is but again quite renovation. While the southern ramp has been modernized in recent times, the north ramp still numerous narrow and blind curves and bends. So has the north ramp of the pass road via 12 hairpin bends, the southern ramp even close to 30 turns.

The roller ball seems unknown in the Stone Age, but to be at least been unused since finds from this period are missing here so far. Prehistoric hunters who used the Rolle Pass route, crossed the ridge preferably located at a different point, namely the immediately adjacent, to the west of the roll pass, 1908 m high Colbriconpass. A road that turns into a path soon leads today, on this transition, which has some stone-age sites. This pass was committed at least since the Paleolithic period, and the hunters were much garbage ' back. On both sides of the transition, especially at the nearby Colbriconseen, was found during excavations in the years 1971/72, several resting places of Palaeolithic hunters. Even in later times the Colbriconpass was used and even had a mule.

In the Middle Ages the Rollepass probably had some significance for inter-regional traffic, certainly for trade, especially Venice. To take care of travelers was from about 1200, the Hospice of San Martino and on the west side of the hospice Paneveggio available.
