Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cape Coast

The Archdiocese of Cape Coast (Latin: Archidioecesis A Litore Aureo ) is a location in Ghana Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Cape Coast. It includes a parts of the Central Region.

History

Pope Leo XIII. founded the Apostolic Prefecture of Gold Coast on February 2, 1879 from annexations of the Apostolic Vicariate of Two Guineas. On May 25, 1901 was elevated to the rank of apostolic vicariate.

With the bull Laeto accepimus it was raised on 18 April 1950 in the rank of Metropolitanerzbistums.

Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:

  • June 28, 1895 at the Apostolic Prefecture of Ivory Coast;
  • March 15, 1923 at the Apostolic Vicariate of lower Volta;
  • February 2, 1932 at the Apostolic Vicariate of Kumasi;
  • December 2, 1943 at the Apostolic Prefecture of Accra;
  • November 20, 1969 to the bishopric of Sekondi- Takoradi.8
