Roman Catholic Diocese of Sendai

The diocese of Sendai (Latin: Dioecesis Sendaiensis, Japaneseカトリック 仙台 教区, katorikku Sendai Kyoku ) is a location in Japan Roman Catholic diocese based in Sendai.

History

Pope Leo XIII. founded the Apostolic Vicariate of Hakodate on April 4, 1891, from annexations of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Japan. Using the Breve Non Nobis maius it was collected on 15 June of the same year the diocese, which was the Archdiocese of Tokyo assumed as suffragan.

According to the decree Cum dioecesis the Congregation for Propagation of the Faith, it moved on 9 March 1936 the episcopal see from Hakodate to Sendai and took on its current name.

It later lost part of its territory in favor of the establishment of new dioceses:

The diocese of Sendai consists of the prefectures Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate and Miyagi in the north of the island of Honshu.
