History

1850, today's Archdiocese of San José de Costa Rica as Diocese of San José de Costa Rica was founded.

The Universidad Católica de Costa Rica in Moray is the only Catholic university in the country, was established in 1993.

The Catholic Church in Costa Rica is represented by the Conferencia Episcopal de Costa Rica ( CECOR ); Chairman of the Bishops' Conference is Hugo Barrantes Ureña. The Apostolic Nuncio Pierre Nguyên Van Tot since 2008.

Cica 3.2 million inhabitants ( 75 % of total population) in Costa Rica are Catholics. The Catholic religion is no state religion, but has great social and political influence.
