Roman Catholicism in Romania

The Roman Catholic Church is the second largest religious denomination in Romania. Its members include 5.4 % of the population, thus a good 1 million people. Contrast, much greater is the Romanian Orthodox Church, to which 86.5 % of the population profess.

The vast majority of Romanian Catholics ( about 870,000 ) are members of the Latin Church, which is traditionally strongly represented among the members of the Hungarian community in Transylvania. About 150,000 are members of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church, which was built as part of the Catholic missionary efforts among the Orthodox population of the Habsburg rule in Transylvania. In addition, the Armenian Catholic Church has a few hundred members in the country. All three particular churches are represented in Romania, each with its own hierarchy.
