Romeyn de Hooghe

Romeyn de Hooghe ( born September 10, 1645 Amsterdam, † June 15 1708 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch engraver of the Baroque. Particularly well known he was by his caricatures of Louis XIV

Career

De Hooghe was the nephew of Pieter de Hooch. 1668 he went to Paris, where he came into contact with the French art, whose influence can be seen throughout his work. In 1673 he married Maria in Amsterdam Lansman from Edam. For his graphic depictions of the battles of Chotyn and Terebovlia he was in 1675 by the Polish king John III. Sobieski ennobled. In 1687 he inherited his uncle's house Pieter de Hooch and has since been based in Haarlem.

De Hooghe was an extremely prolific and versatile artist and worked as an illustrator, engraver, painter and sculptor. During his artistic career he produced more than 3,500 artworks. His book illustrations accompanied some of the main laid to his journals.
