Ronald Davis

Ronald Davis (as Artist: Ron Davis) ( born June 29, 1937 in Santa Monica, California, USA) is an American painter, printmaker and object artist. His work has been mentioned in connection with the Geometric abstraction, the abstract illusionism, the Lyric abstraction, hard-edge painting, Shaped canvas painting, Color field painting, and 3D computer graphics. He lives in Arroyo Hondo, near Taos, New Mexico.

Life and work

Ronald Davis grew up in Wyoming, Cheyenne. From 1955 to 1956 he attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie. 1959 at the age of 22 years, began his interest in painting. From 1960 to 1964 he studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. At the time of Abstract Expressionism was the dominant artistic movement of the time, which had a considerable influence on his artistic development. In 1962 he attended the Summer School of Music and Art from Yale University in Norfolk.

He created in the early 1960s paintings in the style of hard-edge, geometric abstraction and Op Art. With these works, he was in 1961, 1962 and 1963 represented the San Francisco Arts Festival in 1963 and 1964 at the Richmond Art Center.

He had his first solo exhibition at the Nicholas Wilder Gallery in Los Angeles. In 1966, Davis was a lecturer at the University of California at Irvine. This year he had a solo exhibition at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York City in 1968 was followed by a solo exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. Also in 1968 were shown by him at the documenta 4 in Kassel in the sculpture section four colored fiberglass objects.

His works are included (among others) in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, at the Tate Gallery in London, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He was awarded a National Endowment for Art In recent years, Davis was a trailblazer in the new artistic expression in the digital painting and digital art. Davis lived and worked from 1965 to 1971 in Los Angeles, and from 1972 to 1990 in Malibu, California. In 1991 he moved to Arroyo Hondo, near Taos, New Mexico.
