Ronald Gordon

Archibald Ronald McDonald Gordon ( born March 19, 1927) is a British Anglican theologian. He was from 1975 to 1984 Bishop of Portsmouth in the Church of England.

Life

Gordon was born as the son of the diplomat Sir Archibald Gordon, CMG, and his wife Dorothy, daughter of Charles Silvester Horne MPs. His great-grandfather Herbert Cozens -Hardy, 1st Baron Cozens -Hardy was 1907-1918 Master of the Rolls. Gordon attended Rugby School and studied at Balliol College, Oxford University; there he was the owner of a music scholarship as an organist ( Organ Scholar ). In 1950, he earned a Bachelor's degree ( BA ), 1952 Master's degree (MA) In preparation for the priesthood, he studied theology at Ripon College Cuddesdon.

In 1952 he was ordained a deacon; 1953 was followed by the ordination. His priestly career began as a vicar ( Curate ) in the East End in London. 1955 Gordon returned as University Chaplain ( Chaplain ) on the Ripon College back. After four years at Ripon College, he was appointed parish priest of a parish in Birmingham. In October 1967, he was appointed as Residenzkanoniker ( Canon residentiary ) member of the cathedral chapter of St Philip's Cathedral in Birmingham. After twelve years as a pastor in Birmingham Gordon was 1971-1975 pastor (Vicar ) at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin ( University Church of St Mary the Virgin ) with responsibility for the parish churches of Saint Cross and Saint Peter- in-the- East in Oxford.

In August 1975 he was appointed as the successor of John Phillips, Bishop of Portsmouth. This office he held until 1984. His successor in the Diocese of Portsmouth was Timothy Bavin. Subsequently, he was a volunteer auxiliary bishop ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the Diocese of Southwark. From 1984 to 1991 he served as Bishop at Lambeth 's chief of staff of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie; his successor in this function was John Yates. At the same time Gordon was from 1985 to 1990 in his role as " Bishop to the Forces" ( The Archbishop of Canterbury 's Episcopal Representative to the Armed Forces) representative of the Archbishop of Canterbury in the British Armed Forces. Gordon was a member of several committees of the Church of England, including the Advisory Board for Redundant Churches and the board of the Oxford Mission.
