Ross S. Sterling

Ross Shaw Sterling ( born February 11, 1875 in Anahuac, Texas; † 25 March 1949 in Fort Worth, Texas ) was an American politician and from 1931 to 1933 governor of BundesstaatesTexas.

Early years

Ross Sterling attended the public schools of his home. Until about 1895, he worked as an assistant on farms. Then he ran in 1903 a feed store. Then he acquired some small banks around and got so into the banking business. Also since 1903 Sterling was in the oil business. In 1910 he founded the Humble Oil and Refining Company, a private oil company, whose president he became. In 1918, he was also president of a local railway company. Political Rise and Governor of Texas

Sterling was a member of the Democratic Party. In 1930 he became chairman of the Road Administration ( Highway Commission ). In this capacity, he was responsible for the expansion of highways in Texas. Then he was elected as a candidate of his party for governor of his state. Ross Sterling took up his new post on January 20, 1931 in the middle of the Great Depression. To prevent overproduction of cotton, he intended to reduce the area under cultivation. However, this was rejected as unconstitutional by a court. In order to curb oil production, he imposed martial law over four districts and had shut down the oil wells. Even that was later rejected as unconstitutional. In 1932 he was defeated in the primaries of his party against the former Governor Miriam A. Ferguson, who was then elected to a second term.

After the end of his governorship to Sterling withdrew from politics and rose again in the oil business. He founded the Sterling Oil and Refine Company, which he was president 1933-1946. In the meantime, he was also president of the American Maid Flour Mills and Ross Sterling Investment Company. Ross Sterling was also CEO of the Houston National Bank. He died in 1949 in Fort Worth. With his wife Maude Abbie Gage he had five children.
