J. W. Henderson

James Wilson Henderson ( born August 15, 1817 Sumner County, Tennessee; † August 30, 1880 in Houston, Texas ) was an American politician and the 4th Governor of Texas.

Henderson left at the age of 19 years, the college near Georgetown in Kentucky and traveled to Texas to support the aspirations for freedom. He reached Texas shortly after the Battle of San Jacinto and was sent to recruit more volunteers back to the U.S.. When he returned to Texas, Sam Houston offered him a job with the Texas Rangers, but he refused. Henderson had decided to settle in Harris County and to become a surveyor. While he was working as such, he began his law studies at the same time. In 1842 he interrupted his work and participated in the Somervell expedition.

On September 4, 1843, he defeated Colonel James Morgan in the battle for a seat in the House of Representatives, in which he was confirmed in 1844. Following annexation by the United States Henderson was elected as vice governor in the first federal Texan government. On November 23, 1853, he was the successor of Peter Hans Borough Bell governor of Texas, where he stayed the rest of the legislative period until 21 December 1853. His successor as Governor Elisha M.
