Roswitha Prize

The Roswitha Prize is the oldest German-language literary prize, which is awarded exclusively to women. Appreciated is thus an outstanding literary individual rating of a living and doing business in Europe writer. The work may belong to all areas of literary creation.

The Roswitha Prize was from 1973 to 1996 annually awarded by the city of Bad Gandersheim as Roswitha Memorial Medal. In 1998 it was renamed to the current name and has been endowed with 5,500 euros. The award is named after the first German poet Roswitha from Gander home.

History

Bad Gandersheim donated 1973 literary prize first as a commemorative medal. This was always awarded on the last Friday of the Frankfurt Book Fair in Frankfurt Romans to a living writer. Condition was of German language and their binding to a life's work. This practice lasted until the year 1996.

In 1998, the medal has been renamed to Roswitha Prize and awarded from immediately in Bad Gandersheim, the action site of the eponym. As an award criterion, individual scientific works can now be used, with the object of research must consist of those fields of science, the object of investigation Roswitha from Gander were home. The Statute states that " ... the focus of this work are topics that look at it from the point of view of literature or philosophy for a time period or society. Jury

The jury may consist of up to nine members, with politicians and government employees are excluded. Last year's winner is automatically jury member in the following year. No one can win the prize twice. The town of Gander home may appoint up to eight volunteer and independent people who meet once a year for consultation.
