Roxburgh Dam

The Roxburgh Dam is the first of the major hydropower projects on the South Island of New Zealand. It locks the Clutha River about 160 km from Dunedin and five kilometers north of the town Roxburgh. The small Siedling Roxburgh Hydro is located near the west side of the dam.

The dam was built in 1949-1956 by Holland, Hannen & Cubitts, put the plant in the period 1956-1962 in stages. The performance was in the early 1960s further increased, so that the eight generators today bring a power output of 320 megawatts. The plant is operated by Contact Energy.

The resulting by the dam six square kilometer reservoir Lake Roxburgh extends almost 30 km upriver.
