Geography

Roxburgh is located on the banks of the Clutha River, 40 km south of Alexandra and belongs administratively to the Central Otago Otago region. Five kilometers north of the town of Roxburgh Dam, the first major built for hydroelectric power extraction on Clutha River Dam is located on the South Island. A lignite mine located north of the village at Coal Creek.

History

The place was an important center dee Otago gold rush of the 1860s.

From 1928 to 1968 led the Roxburgh Branch, a branch line of the Main South Line to Roxburgh. During the entire time the line went a loss, but helped in the economic development of the town and was important for the supply of materials for construction of the Roxburgh Dam.

Today, of the former railway endpoint remain only radicals such as the pit of a turntable, a water tank for the supply of steam locomotives and the station building, now a barn and workshop. Most of the houses, where once lived the railway workers (known as " Railway Houses" ) are, today, and include private individuals.

The town shooting the film disappeared as the sea (2004) were filmed in Roxburgh.

Economy

Livestock farming and fruit growing are the main industries. The region is one of the most important areas for growing apples in New Zealand, as well as cherries and apricots are harvested.

Transport and Infrastructure

The leading through the town of State Highway 8 connects with the east coast of Central Otago region, which was also the city of Dunedin is located 155 km to the east.
