Kungliga Konstakademien, full name Kungliga academies för de fria konsterna ( Royal Academy of Arts ) is a Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm. By 1978, the Academy was also responsible for the Kungliga Konsthögskolan Stockholm (Royal College of Art ), which is solely responsible for the artistic education today, while the Academy has manage generic tasks. Since the Kungliga academies and the Kungliga Konsthögskolan have the same historical origin, they are treated together here.

History

In 1735 the Academy of Carl Gustav Tessin (son of Nicodemus Tessin the Younger ) and the architect Carl Hårleman under the name Kongl. was ritakademien (Royal Academy of Drawing ) was founded. Among the main subjects belonged life drawing. 1768 called on architect Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz to the first recorded meeting of the Academy and in 1773 was Gustav III. Write the first statutes. In the later 18th century, the school had its heyday as the former great artists such as Johan Tobias Sergel, taught there. 1810 got the school its present name: Kungliga academies för de fria konsterna.

1864 women were admitted to the Academy, the first was Anna Nordlander. End of the 19th century visited, among others Carl Larsson and Ernst Josephson Academy. They tried along with 82 other Swedish artists image in vain to reform the school, they were known as the Opponenterna. 1870 pulled the Academy in its present building in the Fredsgatan 12 in the Norrmalm neighborhood of Stockholm.

After 1876, the Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm was opened, the training moved to the architects in this school, and the School of Art Stockholm offered now a construction training, focused on architecture, architectural history and restoration.

In 1978, Kungliga Konsthögskolan separated organizationally from the Academy, and in 1995 moved the art school in a separate building on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm.

Objective

The original objective of the Academy was to promote painting, sculpture and architecture in Sweden, including education. Which now include the management of his own house and several donations as well as the operation of a library and the arranging of exhibitions and lectures. The Academy of Art has a large collection of works of art of the past 270 years, mostly from its own members, and a famous collection of ancient plaster and an extensive archive.

Today, the Royal Academy of Art maintains the legacy of their history since 1735 and works for the importance of art and architecture in Swedish society, while the training of artists was transferred entirely to the Royal College of Art. This is an independent university in 1978 and moved in 1995 into its own building with studios and workshops on Skeppsholmen.
