Royden Rabinowitch

Royden Rabinowitch ( born March 6, 1943 in Toronto, Ontario ) is a Canadian- Belgian sculptor and draftsman.

Life and work

Royden Rabinowitch was born in 1943 in Toronto, Canada. Haim D. Rabinowitch is his uncle and the sculptor David Rabinowitch his twin brother.

He spent his school days at the Richmond Hill High School, Ontario. In the 60s, at the beginning of his career in London, he was around to a group of artists to Tony Urquhart. After moving to Waterloo, he taught at the University of Waterloo and later free art at the Ontario College of Fine Art In the 70s he moved to the United States and taught at Yale University in New Haven. Other teaching assignments Leiden in the Netherlands followed at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, at the University of St Andrews in Scotland and the University.

R. Rabinowitch currently lives in Ghent, Belgium and Dublin, Ireland.

The work of R. Rabinowitch includes floor and wall sculptures in metal and large-scale drawings, the artistic minimalism are very close. In his early works he refers explicitly to Alberto Giacometti, David Smith and Constantin Brâncuşi.

"(...) In addition to the art itself Rabinowitch but also deals with studies of music and science. This lead him to the belief that the shape of reality, which is clearly defined by the rationality of science, can not be reconciled with the sensual and physical experience space. The contradiction between knowledge and experience becomes for him the subject of an intense debate continues to this day and is thus of decisive influence in the development of its consistent visual language.
