Rudy Collins

Rudolph Alexander Collins ( born July 24, 1934 in New York City; † 15 August 1988) was an American jazz drummer.

Collins played first trumpet, then turned to the drums. He studied this instrument in 1953-57 Sam Ulano. In 1952 he became a professional musician, played with Hot Lips Page and 1953 for Cootie Williams, then at Eddie Bonnemere 1953-1956 - next appearances on Johnny Smith, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding and Roy Eldridge (1956). Played in 1957/58 at Austin Powell - next at Cab Calloway and Carmen McRae (1958 ), 1959 Cecil Taylor and from the end of 1959 and 1960 with Herbie Mann. Collins played from 1962-67 with Dizzy Gillespie, touring 1967/68 with Ray Bryant, Kenny Burrell, Woody Herman; played in 1969 with Junior Mance, Lloyd Price, Harry Belafonte. Was around 1970 active in theater orchestras and taught since drums; 1972 Earl Hines; 1973 in New York clubs at Duke Pearson and Lee Konitz; 1974 Randy Weston and the North American tour of Count Basie, 1975 Cleo Laine / John Dankworth.
