Overview

The RUB was 1962 ( Commencement of teaching operation 1965), the first foundation university in the Federal Republic. The university was created outside of the city as a campus university in Bochum- Querenburg: Up to a few branches all faculties are housed on the campus. The University, the residential town Hustadt and both serving shopping center Uni-Center dominate since the district.

The medical students complete their practical training is not centrally located in a private hospital, but are distributed to different hospitals in Bochum and the surrounding area. By 2012 this unique in Germany decentralized training was also referred to as the Bochum model. However, since 2012, the clinics involved in presenting a uniform appearance as the University Hospital of the Ruhr University ( RUB UK ).

The RUB is the beginning of a reform university. In the introduction of graded courses as specified by the Bologna Declaration, it takes a leading role in Germany.

Nationwide, they took second place in the list of the DFG Collaborative Research Centres. In the current DFG ranking among the 40 German universities with the highest volume of approvals for research projects from 2002 to 2004, it reached third place in the life sciences, the ninth place in engineering and # 12 in the natural sciences. In comparison, the total RUB achieved the 15th Place. The Ruhr University was located in 2007 and 2011 in the final round of the Excellence Initiative undertaken by the federal government and sat down in each case by two of the three funding lines.

History

Prehistory

The History of the University in Bochum begins in 1948 in the first term of the Parliament with the cross-party call for a second technical university in Westphalia. Favorite for the location, however, was the city of Dortmund. Funds for the purchase of an equivalent area in Westphalia approved - the Culture Committee were on 20 December 1960 - and thus only almost twelve years later. After another, some acrimonious discussions, the Bochum - Querenburg sat with 102 to 87 votes against Dortmund by the Diet.

Planning

For rapid implementation after further planning of the scientific priorities in 1962, a competition was awarded to the well-known architects such as Gropius and Mies van der Rohe were invited directly, but in which also all the others were registered in the Federal Republic established architects. From the designs submitted 85 the design of the office Hentrich, Petschnigg & Partner prevailed from Dusseldorf.

Construction

The construction of the university was officially started on January 2, 1964, the earthworks for building IA, IB and IC of the engineering sciences. By using a uniform grid size for the structure of the building precast concrete could be produced directly on the site in industrial casting process, which meant that the engineering could begin operation on June 30, 1965 during the construction of the building of the natural sciences, humanities, medicine still ongoing until August 1969. The central forum area with a library, administration, auditorium and cafeteria was begun in 1971 and completed on 1 August 1974.

University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr

In March 2007, was founded by the three universities of Bochum, Dortmund and Duisburg -Essen University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr ( UAMR ). This is intended to strengthen the cooperation between the teaching and research activities of the universities involved and give the universities a better position than an excellent location in the national and international science and study landscape. One of the first projects of the UAMR RuhrCampusOnline promotes university -wide teaching between the three Ruhr universities using blended learning.

Architecture

The campus is located on the edge of a hill overlooking the Kemnade. 13 main buildings are grouped into four symmetrical complexes from three to four high-rise buildings around the cafeteria, the auditorium, the University Library and the Forum of the University.

The architectural concept is by Helmut Hentrich ( architects Hentrich, Petschnigg & Partner ). He sees the university as a port in the sea of knowledge. The building itself symbolize ships that have " created " at their points, the roof of the auditorium reminiscent of a seashell. Also in the early 1990s, the station "Ruhr -Universität " subway line U35 Matching was designed, whose roof is supposed to represent waves.

Originally, the plan was still significantly greater RUB. Several buildings were not built, including the planned University Medical Center. Two of the three provided for the medical faculty building (MB and MC) were indeed completed, but never related. They stood empty for years until they were finally leased to private companies. The revenue generated from were used for the construction of the dormitory " House of Europe ".

In the lecture hall, which also serves as a venue for the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, is one of the most modern and largest organs in the organ factory Klais. The organ from the year 1998 and has 6146 pipes, summarized in register 82.

The architecture of the Ruhr- University is a controversial issue today. The almost sole Material concrete generates a drab overall impression in bad weather. In good weather, however, the bright concrete with the blue sky contrasts, so that an open sun-drenched overall impression. In the early 1990s the hard concrete architecture was cushioned by contrasting exterior paints, rearrangements of the main building and the green spaces. Even within the Excellence Initiative, the University will be renovated in early 2007.

On the steep slope down to the Ruhr is the Botanical Garden of the University.

The campus is a major overhaul in the coming decades. The main canteen was already gutted between 2003 and 2006 and reshaped and for the renovation of the office building, the new building ID was completed in August 2010 in the I-series. It serves as an alternative surface to core redevelop the other buildings in succession can. The total cost is estimated at almost € 1.2 billion.

Obtained in the course of the renovation and the campus is significantly redesigned. Among other things, almost all of the remaining green areas between and adjacent to the buildings be built gradually. These buildings are z.T. used commercially. In a balance to this, however, one begins to green the flat roofs.
