Runkuraqay

The fortress Runkurakay ( Quechua ) was a resting and supply base ( " Tambo " ) with a strategic view of the surrounding countryside on Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

The ruins are located on 3,720 m above sea level close to the pass, " Abra de Runkurakay » ( 3970 m asl ). The structure consists of two concentric and inclined walls that surround the chambers and the court. Archaeologists suspect that Runkurakay was a resting place ( Tambo ) for messengers, because the construction consists of several dormitories and stables for the animals.
