Ruperto Chapí

Ruperto Chapí y Lorente ( born March 27, 1851 in Villena, Alicante, † March 25, 1909 in Madrid) was a Spanish composer.

At the age of seven he was taught for flute and clarinet. Later, he played cornet in the band of his city. The Banda Municipal de Alicante, he conducted 15 years. At the age of 16 he went to study at the Conservatory to Madrid where he studied composition with Miguel Galiana harmony and Emilio Arrieta. After that, he was first conductor of a brass band of an artillery regiment. Then he studied in Paris at the Conservatoire. Some years later he went to Rome to complete his musical education.

In 1878 he returned to Spain. Although his first Zarzuela originated in 1867, he celebrated his return from Rome great success with this particular form of incidental music in Spain. As a result, annually published one to two zarzuela by him, which brought him great fame. In his oeuvre are located next to operas, orchestral works, chamber music and concert band works.
