Region

Sabon Guida is a rural municipality in the Department Madaoua in Niger.

Geography

Sabon Guida is located at the junction of Great Landscape Sudan Sahel and shares land borders with the neighboring state of Nigeria. The neighboring communities in Niger are Doguérawa in the West, Galma Koudawatché the northwest, Madaoua in the Northeast and Bangui in the east. By Sabon Guida runs in a north -south direction, the total of about 300 kilometers long Tarka Valley, which stretches from Tarka in the Zinder region of Niger to Nigeria. The municipality is divided into 37 administrative villages, 14 traditional villages, 68 hamlets and a warehouse. The main town of the rural community is Sabon Guida, consisting of the administrative villages Sabon Guida I, Sabon Guida II and III Sabon Guida.

History

In Sabon Guida took in the 1950s, the cultivation of onions its beginning, the spread from here across large parts of the Tahoua region and plays an important role in the economy and in the cultural identity of the region. Even the famous onion variety Violet de Galmi, which is named after the village Galmi in the neighboring municipality Doguérawa, from where it became the national trade, has its origin in Sabon Guida.

The rural community of Sabon Guida came out at a nationwide administrative reform a part of the canton Madaoua as an administrative unit in 2002.

Population

At the 2001 census Sabon Guida had 62 024 inhabitants. For the year 2010 83.574 inhabitants were calculated. Around two-thirds of the population are Hausa, roughly one-third Tuareg. There is also a small minority of Fulbe.

Policy

In the local elections in July 2004 Idi Tanko ( PNDS - Tarayya ) was elected mayor.

Economy and infrastructure

The municipality is located in that narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, ranging from Tounouga in the west to the east Malawa and operated in irrigated crop production for cash crops. In addition to the livestock farming is the main livelihood of the population. With the neighboring country Nigeria informal trading is conducted. At several deposits gypsum and lime are mined. The health centers in Sabon Guida do not cover the entire municipality, which is why the population must partially switch to the district hospital in Madaoua. In education are 42 primary schools and one Sekunderschule in the capital available.
