Azarori

Region

Azarori (also: Azérori ) is a rural municipality in the Department Madaoua in Niger.

Geography

Azarori lies in the Sahel. The neighboring municipalities are Tama in the northwest, Bouza in the northeast, southeast and Madaoua Galma Koudawatché in the southwest. The municipality is divided into seven administrative villages, nine traditional villages and 21 hamlets. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village Azarori (also: Azérori sédentaire ).

History

The rural community Azarori was founded in 2002 at a nationwide administrative reform a part of the canton Madaoua forth.

Population

At the 2001 census Azarori had 13,873 inhabitants. For the year 2010 18.692 inhabitants were calculated. In the community members live the Hausa subgroup Gobirawa and the Tuareg Kel Gress subgroup.

Policy

In the local elections in July 2004 Hadi Saïdou ( PNDS - Tarayya ) was elected mayor.

Economy and infrastructure

Azarori lies in that narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, ranging from Tounouga in the west to the east Malawa and operated in irrigated crop production. There are cultivated millet, sorghum, cowpeas, peanuts, onions and lettuce. Another significant economic activity is cattle raising. The municipality also gypsum and limestone are mined. Due to the proximity to the departmental capital Madaoua there are few own health and educational facilities in Azarori. In education, there are eleven primary schools and one secondary school. With Madaoua Azarori is connected by the National Road 16, which leads in the other direction to the regional capital of Tahoua.
