Horch Sachsenring P240

The Horch P 240 " Sachsenring " was a representative luxury car, which was developed and produced from 1956 to 1959 in the former VEB Horch factory in Zwickau.

History

On September 13, 1953, the Horch development department received from the GDR Ministry of engineering development contract for a new mid-size car. Here we used the results already obtained from the military development theme bucket P2M and commander cars P2L, making the FEW Chemnitz had been commissioned for the Kasernierte people police of the GDR. Engineers in the former Auto Union plant Sigmar (formerly Walker ) had already been developed for the six-cylinder four -stroke gasoline engine OM6. As a completely new in-house development then brought in 1955, the VEB Horch motor vehicle and engine plants in Zwickau as a luxury car to the Horch P240 with six-cylinder engine out. The car received in 1956 in addition the model name Sachsenring - the name of the nearby racetrack of the same name. 1957 was transferred to Horchwerke because of the trademark dispute, the model name, the first motor vehicle and engine plants in Zwickau firmierten from now on as VEB Sachsenring.

Technically and visually corresponded to the passenger cars fully the contemporary taste, but let the situation in the GDR to the inclusion of a larger series production. Originally an annual production of 1956 by 6000 and 1957 by 9000 cars was planned. For tools and equipment twelve million East German marks were invested. The total production from 1956 to 1959 but was only 1382 vehicles, some vehicles were also exported. In addition to the four-door sedan also some convertibles and 1958 were also prepared Combi models. The combination models in the special colors blue and white were intended exclusively for the German Television of the GDR. The P240 came with authorities and sporadically at high party functionaries used. The vehicle price at that time was about 27,000 East German marks.

The Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD ) exerted pressure on the party and state leaders of the GDR. It came to an export ban and required to expand production capacity investments were scaled back. Finally, the GDR leadership was prompted to the end of production of the P240 in order for the import of Soviet GAZ M-21 Volga and - to force type vehicles Chaika GAZ -13 - for the government of the GDR. In 1959 the production was stopped completely. The engine of the P240 was in the SUV IFA P3 (or Sachsenring P3) and later installed in a revised form in the parade vehicle Sachsenring P240 representative of the National People's Army of the GDR. Today, only a few copies exist well-preserved.

Stages of development

The first stage of development of the Horch P240 contributed to the vertically oriented radiator grille, the old trademark; the crowned H ( Horch ) and the winged globe. The side horizontally extending moldings were like the grille chrome. The front turn signals were round.

From the second stage of development 1955/1956 front and rear side panels were extended. The car behind was fin-like combination lamps, front wide, wraparound direction indicator lights and a grille with horizontal lines. In addition to the Horch brand name model name " Sachsenring " was introduced, which was added as a side chrome insignia.

The third stage of development 1957/1958 has externally to its predecessor only minor differences. A special feature are curved instead of straight side moldings. As from February 1957 Horch works guiding the Horch brand symbols was enjoined by the West German Auto Union GmbH, the brand symbols (S for Sachsenring ) had to be replaced on the hood above the grille by the S symbol in a circle. Only from this point was the car model name Sachsenring P240.

The ambience of the Leipzig Autumn Fair article issued in August Horch Museum Zwickau P240 was a combination of the second and third stage of development.
