Saifur Rahman

Mohammad Saifur Rahman ( Bengali: সাইফুর রহমান, Sāiphur Rahaman; born October 6, 1932 at the village Bahar Mordon, Sylhet; † 5 September 2009 in Ashuganj, Chittagong ) was a Bangladeshi politician. He was leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and had the longest tenure as Minister of Finance in Bangladesh.

Training

Saifur Rahman was a member of the language movement in 1952. He went to the University of Dhaka and graduated with a Bachelor in 1953. Later he studied in London, England until 1958. Rahman was a specialist in monetary policy, fiscal policy and economic development.

He was president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh and President of Bangladesh Jatishangha Samiti. Rahman joined a political party in 1977, the Jatiyatabadi Ganatantrik Dal, a coalition of the later president Ziaur Rahman, the then Bangladesh Nationalist Party was 1978.

Political career

Since 1978, Rahman was a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP ). Rahman was appointed Minister of Finance of the first BNP government under Ziaur Rahman and it was until 1980. Later he was again Finzanzminister of 15 February 1996 to 29 December 2008. During this time he made 12 budget plans in his country and praised the opening of the economy of Bangladesh to other countries in the early 1990s. His predecessor as finance minister of Bangladesh was Azizur Rahman, Syed Mohsin Ali his successor.

Family and death

Saifur Rahman had three sons and a daughter. His wife, Duree Samad Rahman, died in 2003 from cancer. One of his sons, M. Naser Rahman, is also active in politics. Saifur Rahman died in a car accident on the way home in Brahmanbaria District on its way from Dhaka to Maulvibazar.
