Saint-Front-la-Rivière

Saint-Front- la -Rivière ( Occitan Sent front la Ribiera ) is a commune with 521 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the north of the Dordogne in the Aquitaine region. It belongs to the district Nontron and the canton of Saint- Pardoux- la -Rivière. It also forms part of the Périgord -Limousin Regional Natural Park.

Etymology

The Occitan name Sent front la Ribiera is derived from the Holy Fronto ( Sanctus Fronto ) and la Ribiera with the importance of the river, meant here is the Dronne.

Geography

Saint-Front- la -Rivière is located five kilometers south-southwest of Saint- Pardoux- la -Rivière, eight kilometers south-east of Nontron and 14 kilometers north-east of Brantome.

The community is surrounded by the following neighboring communities:

  • Saint- Pardoux- la -Rivière in the north.
  • Milhac -de- Nontron in the northeast and east.
  • Villars in the southeast.
  • Quinsac in the south and southwest.
  • Sceau - Saint-Angel in the west and northwest.

The municipality is traversed in approximately in the center of the Dronne in NNE -SSW direction. The Dronne has in the municipality of Saint-Front- la -Rivière next to a small right-hand tributary at L' Etang and some dry valleys no significant tributaries. Near the center, the Dronnetal expands to nearly one kilometers.

The topographically lowest point of the municipality is located 125 meters above the sea on the River Dronne in the extreme south, the highest point at 233 meters on the southwest corner at Malcontent.

Geology

The municipality of Saint-Front- la -Rivière is constructed entirely of flat-lying sediments of the northern Aquitaine basin, essentially Dogger and Upper Cretaceous. Oldest open-minded Formation is Bathonian Bottom ( Oolithkalke to see the left and right edge of the valley of the Dronne River north to just south of the village ). In follow cryptocrystalline Fossilkalke and bioclastic limestones of the Lower and Oberbathons. About the Dogger transgredierte Cenomanian ( the sandy, Alveolinen - leading limes are smaller deposits left the Dronne at Le Caneau and Le Sablon and right of the Dronne at L' Etang, at Soulages and at Milan open ). The Cenomanian is replaced by layers of Turoniums ( chalky nodular of Ligériens and silicified, cryptocrystalline Rudistenkalke of Angoumiens ). The higher slopes of Pleistocene alluvium ( fluvial gravel ) and it hervorgegangenem by rearrangement colluvium are then covered. Ecology

History

The oldest structure in Saint-Front- la -Rivière is begun in Romanesque style church of Saint-Front. The ruins of the Château de la Renaudie go back to the 13th century. The Château Saulnier also dates from this period. In the 15th century, the Château de Pommier was built. The Château du Caneau followed in the 19th century.

Saint-Front- la -Rivière counted in the middle of the 19th century, just over a thousand inhabitants. Starting in 1886, began a steady decline. After major losses in the 1960s, the population of Saint-Front- la -Rivière is since then only slightly.

The town of Saint-Front- la -Rivière is located on the D 83 of Brantome to Saint -Pardoux- la -Rivière. He is also crossed by a municipal road in east-west direction, which leads from Milhac -de- Nontron after Sceau -Saint- Angel. Through the southern part of the municipality of the D 3 runs of Nontron to Villars.
