Salim Ghazal

Salim Ghazal BS ( born June 7, 1931 in Machgara in Lebanon, † 29 April, 2011 Sidon ) was until 2006 Patriarchal Curia bishop and auxiliary bishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Melkite Church in the Patriarchate of Antioch, based in Damascus.

Life

Salim Ghazal was ordained on June 22, 1958 Chaplain of the Melkite Basilian the Most Holy Redeemer. Since 1962 he worked in the vicinity of Sidon as a religion teacher and coordinator for interfaith cooperation of Christian and Muslim students. From 1985 to 1987, he was now ordained Archimandrite, Apostolic Administrator of Sidon and from July 1995 to June 2001 the Superior General of his religious order.

Work

In the early years a priest sat Salim Ghazal, as it is traditional for the Melkite clergy, for interreligious dialogue. In 1990 Ghazal founded together with Christians and Muslims the "Center for Dialogue and Development ". There are symposia, lectures and conferences conducted as weekly talks on interfaith cooperation instead. The center supports nursing homes and works with " Habitat for Humanity " together, it promotes housing finance and offers computer and Internet courses. The staff at the center, which are composed of Christians and Muslims, the approach and promote development in the social and human affairs. The aim of this work defines Ghazal as an aspiration of practical coexistence and the capacity for dialogue of religions. 2001 Archbishop Ghazal was elected chairman of the Lebanese section of " Habitat for Humanity ". In 2007 he was awarded in recognition of his 50 - year commitment to the " Pacem in Terris Award."
