Salomon, King of Brittany

Salomon ( Salomon de Poher, Breton: Salaun; * 825 or 835; † June 25 ( or 15 December), 874) was a prince of the Bretons in the 9th century, which led the country to the largest display of power in its history as an independent king.

Salomon was a nephew of the Breton ruler Nominoë († 851 ) and gained 857 dominion over the Bretons by killing his cousin Erispoë. Although he had from the West Frankish king Charles the Bald been awarded in the year 852 a third of Brittany, but should be done in response to the approach of the Erispoë to the Franks his usurpation, being on the engagement of his daughter with the Frankish king's son Ludwig had followed the Stammler. In the following years he was involved in the Bald several revolts of the Frankish nobles against Charles, who responded by setting up Roberts of the Brave as Margrave of Neustria Mark.

In the year 863 Salomon became the contractual recognition of Charles the Bald, and received from that country between Sarthe and Mayenne, perhaps, awarded as a Frankish vassal. In Frankish chronicles (see Regino and Annales Bertiniani ) he is at this time still as " Duke of the Bretons " ( dux Brittonum ) called while he was already recognized by Breton authors as "king". In the year 866 he finally emancipated itself from the Frankish supremacy and promoted a Norman army under the leadership of Hasteinn ( Did Ingo ) on which he sent plundering in the western Neustria (now Anjou and Maine). In the battle of Brissarthe the Normans won a complete victory over a Frankish contingent under Margrave Robert the Brave, who was killed. In the negotiated in 867 peace with Charles the Bald Salomon achieved the greatest territorial expansion of the Breton territory, experienced by the part of the Franks, the Cotentin and the Avranchin was left to him. In the Frankish chronicles he was henceforth dubbed as the " King," which his equality to the king of the Franks was recognized.
