Salvador Laurel

Salvador " Doy " Laurel Hidalgo ( born November 18, 1928 in Tanauan City, Batangas Province, Philippines, † January 27, 2004 in Atherton, California, United States) was a Filipino politician.

Life

Laurel came from an influential political family in the Philippines. His father José P. Laurel was president of the Philippines, his older brother Jose B. Laurel, Jr. was Speaker of the House, while his younger brother, Sotero H. Laurel was a senator.

He was a longtime member of the Nacionalista Party, one of the oldest parties in the country, and at times a senator. As such, he was also a friend of the murdered leader of the opposition in 1983, Benigno Aquino, Jr.. After his death he was chairman of twelve united opposition parties UNIDA. In this role, he also argued indirectly for an end to the aid of the United States of America, because this is only support the rule of President Ferdinand Marcos.

Laurel abandoned in February 1986 in favor of Corazon Aquino 's candidacy in the presidential election and instead ran as the Vice President. After it came to election rigging in favor of the incumbent president Ferdinand Marcos at the beginning of 1986 elections, this led to the EDSA Revolution, which was characterized by non-violent protests and became a mass movement of the people, this eventually led to a flight of Marcos on 25 February 1986 in the United States.

Laurel was then February 25, 1986 Vice President and was at the same time from February 25 to March 25, 1986 Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1986 to 1987. The Office of the Vice President, he held to the end of Aquino's term of office on 30 June 1992.
