Salvatore Sciarrino

Salvatore Sciarrino ( born April 4, 1947 in Palermo ) is a contemporary Italian composer who is best known for his chamber music and his music theater works.

Biography

Even as a small child Sciarrino dealt with the visual arts, but gradually turned from them, when he discovered his interest in music. In an autobiographical sketch Sciarrino reveals that he is proud to have the music learned as a self-taught and never attended a conservatory. Under the guidance of Antonino Titone he began to compose the age of twelve. Later he studied at Turi Belfiore. 1962 was first listed as part of the Fourth International Week Nuova Musica in Palermo one of his works. The composer himself sees the resulting 1959-1965 works, however, as a result of not yet completed apprenticeship. After leaving school at the grammar school he went first to Rome and later to Milan.

Sciarrino was three years as artistic director of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna and has also taught at the conservatories in Milan, Perugia and Florence, as well as training courses. For several years he has lived in Città di Castello, a small town in Umbria.

Work

In his works, he deals with a lot of overtones, the sound and the " color" of sounds and silence.

However, Sciarrino was known particularly for its anti-naturalistic and mystical looking music theater works. Most works were created in the 1980s for Sciarrino's " theater of the body," the circumstances linked to the performance experience of the sixties.

In his opera Luci mie traditrici, which premiered in 1998, he draws on the tragic life of the Italian composer Carlo Gesualdo.

His opera La porta della legge ( Gateway to the Act), which was premiered on 25 April 2009 in the Wuppertal Opera House, directed by John Weigand, based on the parable Before the Law by Franz Kafka. Sciarrino can repeat the scene of the encounter between the gatekeeper and the inlet seekers and start a third time, with variations in instrumentation, music, text and scene, and gives the work the subtitle quasi un monologo circulare ( as it were a circling monologue ).
