Sant'Abbondio

Sant'Abbondio is a town in the municipality in the district Gambarogno Gambarogno, in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

Fusion community

Sant'Abbondio was, until April 24, 2010 an independent political community. The neighboring municipalities were Caviano, Gerra and Indemini in Switzerland and Pino sulla Sponda del Lago Maggiore and Veddasca in the province of Varese in Lombardy in Italy.

On 25 November 2007, the merger of the nine communities on the south shore of Lake Maggiore to the municipality Gambarogno was approved by the voters of eight municipalities: Caviano, contone, Gerra (Gambarogno ) Indemini, Magadino, Ascona, Sant'Abbondio and Vira ( Gambarogno). Only San Nazzaro was a majority against. Against the parliamentary vote, nevertheless be carried out as planned, the merger has been appealed to the Federal Court. Following the rejection of the complaint, the merger could come into force on 25 April 2010.
