São Mateus is a city in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. It was founded in 1544 and had approximately 109,000 inhabitants in 2010. It is the second oldest and eighth largest city in the state.

São Mateus is since 1958 the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of São Mateus. It is since 2007 led by Bishop Zanoni Demettino Castro.

Geography

São Mateus is on the left bank of the Rio São Mateus. The distance to Vitória, the capital of the state, is 219 kilometers.

The city is bordered to the north by Boa Esperança, Pinheiros and Conceição da Barra, in the south of São Gabriel da Palha, Vila Valério, Jaguaré and Linhares and on the west by Nova Venécia. In the east, the city is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.
