The Saramacca is a river in Suriname ( South America), in the districts Sipaliwini, Para and Saramacca.

River course

The Saramacca rises in the northern foothills of the Wilhelmi Stevenage promontory. It flows northward where he = noise dam ( Lelyfälle ) formed the mighty Lawaaidam, of which the main case has a total drop of about 10 m. North of the Marrondorf Akulitatojeprati he takes on the coming from the left, the important side river Tukumutu which receives its water on the northern slope of the Emma Chain. After more smaller waterfalls and some Marrondörfer happened, the Saramacca forms north of Posugrunu an extensive waterfall complex, of which the Grandam is the most important. He is forced at January Basi Gadoberg with the eponymous waterfall over several kilometers to flow eastward. His way to the north continuing the flow passes some Marrondörfer, forms the Kintibofufall and takes north of mamADAM the right side river, the small Saramacca and south of the Kwakugron Mindrineti on. The Mindrineti is known for its gold deposits in the lower reaches. After the Saramacca has left the district Sipaliwini he crosses the Avanaveroweg with the Bailey bridge. The river then winds strong to Uitkijk where the Saramaccakanal is connected by ship locks with the river and a ferry connects the places Uitkijk and Hamburg ( former plantation ). Gone Uitkijk prevents the Saramacca to the west and behind Groningen he crosses the so-called east- west connection with bridge, flowing between the farming land and oil extraction plant on the plantation Catharina Sophia to Coppenamepunkt, where the river meets with the Coppename into the Atlantic.

Special

The Saramacca has a catchment area of approximately 9400 km ² and the length of the estuary is 255 km. As the waterway is the river especially important for the local freight and passenger transport to the country building areas. The drivability is hampered by sand banks in the estuary.

Research

The scientific exploration of the upper reaches have the measurements of Loth in the 70s of the 18th century, the Saramacca expedition under Van Stockum ( 1902-1903 ), the 3rd Table Mountain Expedition ( 1958) Geijskes and the work of the Centraal Bureau Lucht card ring (Central Office for aerial mapping ) and the Geologic Mijnbouwkundige service ( Geological- bergbaukundlicher service) Contributions delivered.

Designation

Lawrence Keymis, friend of Sir Walter Raleigh who had explored the river in 1596 called him Shurama. Later names were Surrmacca, Saramo, Saramacas and Sarameca. The Arawaks called the river Surama, of which probably the present name was derived.

Bridges

Besides the aforementioned bridge, north of Groningen, a new bridge over the Saramacca from the place Uitkijk was handed over to Hamburg to traffic on June 24, 2011. Construction has already started in May 2005. Poor planning and miscalculations led to lowering of the bridge piers. After the originally ordered contractor was not able to deliver the bridge safe for traffic, a contract was signed for the completion of the bridge in March 2010 between the Surinamese government and the Dutch construction company Ballast Nedam. Adds an additional cost of 3.7 million euros were connected.

On July 17, 2011, a new bridge over the Saramacca at Pikin Saron, among other things, the place Bigi Poika opens, inaugurated by President Bouterse. This 175 meter long and 9.60 meter wide concrete bridge replaced an old ramshackle wooden bridge.
