Sarmīte Ēlerte

Sarmite Ēlerte ( born April 8, 1957 in Riga) is a Latvian journalist and politician. From 1992 to 2008 she was editor in chief of the daily newspaper " Diena ", 2010 and 2011 she was Minister of Culture of the Republic of Latvia.

Life

Sarmite Ēlerte attended secondary Ranked # 45 in Riga. After high school she studied journalism at the University of Latvia, she completed her studies in 1980. In a distance learning program from 1983 to 1988 at the State All-Union Institute of Cinematography in Moscow, she earned a degree as a film critic. From 1978 to 1988 she worked for the magazine " Literatūra un Maksla ", where she was responsible for the film, television and photography, among other responsibilities from 1983. In 1988, she became involved in the establishment of an information center of the Latvian People's Front ( Latvijas Tautas fronte ). After the victory of the Popular Front in the elections in 1990 was Ēlerte head of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia Information Centre, a function which they held until 1991. In 1990, she was deputy editor of the daily newspaper Diena, two years later, the editor in chief (until 2008). In 2007, she was one of the founding members of the European Council on Foreign Relations ( ECFR ), a mainly supported by George Soros think tank. Previously, she had been its president already 1993-1996 Member of the Board of the Latvian section of the Soros Foundation, and from 1997 to 2006. Since 2009 Ēlerte chairman of the National Council for Culture.

In 2007 Sarmite Ēlerte was together with Kalniete driving force behind the so-called Umbrella Revolution ( Lietussargu Revolution ), which goes against the " oligarchs", the ruling circles of power to Ainārs Šlesers, Aivars Lembergs, Andris and Šķēle, straightened. In 2009, she was involved in the process of consolidation of the Latvian center-right forces that arrived an electoral alliance with the name Vienotība in order for the elections to the 10th Saeima. In these elections Sarmite Ēlerte ran successfully on the Vienotība - state list for Semgallen and entered the Saeima. On 3 November 2010 was Ēlerte Minister of Culture in the second cabinet Valdis Dombrovskis. In the elections to the 11th Saeima she was not elected to parliament. Since 1 June 2013, it sits instead in Riga City Council.

Private and Awards

Sarmite Ēlerte is the daughter of Elfrida and Ansis Elert, who during the Second World War, editor of the newspaper " Tautas BALSS " (German voice of the people ), which campaigned in the underground against both the Soviet and against the German occupiers. Her brother was Ivars 1990-1993 Member of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia. Sarmite Ēlerte has a son. She is a member of the Latvian Association of cinematograph.

Ēlerte was awarded the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav and in 1999 the Latvian Three - Star Order, third class in 1998.
