Satkhira District

Satkhira ( Bengali: সাতক্ষীরা জেলা, Sātakṣīrā Jela ) is an administrative district in the south-western Bangladesh which is within the Division of Khulna, the superior administrative unit. The capital lies in the northern part of the district is also called Satkhira.

The 3858.33 km ² large district in the north has Jessore to the neighboring district, to the east lies the district of Khulna, south of the Bay of Bengal and on the west side lies the Indian state of West Bengal.

The main rivers of the largely collected by the district Sundarbans are the Kobadak, Sonai, Kholpatua, Morischap, Raimangal, Hariabhanga, Ichamati, Betrabati and Kalindi - Jamuna.

Satkhira in 1861 initially administratively subordinated to Jessore before it was subordinate to 1882 Khulna. Since 1984 it is an independent administrative district, which is in turn divided into the seven so-called Upazilas: Satkhira Sadar, Assasuni, Debhata, Kalaroa, Kaliganj, Shyamnagar and Tala. Within this administrative subdivision, there are two self-governing cities ( municipalities ), 79 Union Parishads (village councils) and 1436 villages.
